The 1000th Model 85 sold, and the 6000th Salsbury scooter sold since 1936 (approximately) - Pomona Facility

The Post-Salsbury Motors Period

Salsbury Motors filed for voluntary bankruptcy in August 1947, and the bankruptcy court appointed a receiver in September 1947. The receiver continued to run the business until selling the remaining assets of Salsbury Motors in a bankruptcy sale in February 1948.

The Salsbury Scrapbooks don't contain anything related to the Salsbury scooter business after the filing of the bankruptcy application in August 1947. Foster no doubt left Salsbury Motors when the company filed for bankruptcy. The material below was pulled from publicly available resources.

September 1947 to February 1948 (In Receivership)

We know that the receiver continued selling and perhaps building scooters from September 1947 until the bankruptcy sale in February 1948. Based on technical releases issued during the receivership period, we can see that the receiver employed some technical people as well. We also know that one dealer in LA (Podolor Motors) was constantly advertising discounted new scooters in late 1947 and and January 1948 in the LA Times. We believe that this dealer was the receiver's outlet for selling scooters.

The SRS has a receiver report stating that the receiver grossed $300,000 from September 1947 thru January 1948. Not all of the $300k related to scooter sales of course. But the receivers could have sold 1000 or more Model 85s. Since Salsbury Motors was producing 60 Model 85s a day In July - August 1947, the receiver obviously acquired a large number of finished Model 85s and a good number more in the pipeline.

SRS owner records show many scooters with serial numbers between 5000 and 11,700, and then only 1 scooter, likely a mistake, between 11,700 and 14,000. We suspect the receiver's manufacturing and sales activity extended up thru 11,700, and then stopped there at the time of the bankruptcy sale.

Brown-Bevis and Wayne Manufacturing (February 1948 to 1950)

Brown-Bevis Co purchased the Salsbury Motors assets in the bankruptcy sale in February 1948. Brown-Bevis made street sweepers in Los Angeles, among other things. When Brown-Bevis acquired Salsbury Motor's assets, including the Pomona facility, the owner of Brown-Bevis created a new company, Wayne Manufacturing to run the Pomona facility. Here is what Wayne Manufacturing acquired in the bankruptcy sale (thru Brown-Bevis):

My Image

Wayne Manufacturing built street sweepers and other things in the Pomona facility after taking over. But Wayne Manufacturing also built and sold scooters out of the remaining inventory (Finished Merchandise) and work in progress that Wayne acquired in the bankruptcy sale. We understand that Wayne only built scooters with what was on hand at the time of the bankruptcy - Wayne did not continue to make scooters once it burned thru what Salsbury Motors had left behind.

As stated above, there is a Model 85 serial number gap between 11,700 and 14,000. The SRS records then show a very significant number of Model 85s with serial numbers between 14,000 and 15,300, with a few stragglers after 15,300. Our best guess is that Wayne Manufacturing built and sold the Model 85s with serial numbers starting with 14,000 et seq.

The above schedule of assets supports the 1300 scooters built and sold by Wayne Manufacturing estimate. Wayne had $364K of finished merchandise and work in progress to play with. That amount included scooters, engines and a few other things. But you can pretty easily get to 1300 scooters at $200 ($260k) with that $364k.

It looks like Wayne Manufacturing terminated all meaningful manufacturing and sales activity in 1950.

We posted the dealer ads from the Wayne Manufacturing period we could find below. Interestingly, many of the ads were from Ohio, where an enterprising young man created a business built around selling new Salsbury scooters. That might explain why there are so many Model 85s in the Ohio area, and why the SRS is centered in Ohio.
