This is a repainted but otherwise unrestored 1937 Aero. Purchased by a tire dealer in Maastricht in the Netherlands in 1937, and the dealer gave the Aero to one of his key employees. That key employee is the man in the above circa 1946 pic. The young boy is the man's nephew. In 2018 I purchased the Aero from the young boy in the pic (thru a dealer) - the young boy owned the scooter for roughly 65 years.
The Aero was used extensively before and after WWII. During WWII the family hid the scooter from the Nazis, who occupied Holland for most of the war. The longtime owner of the scooter (the young boy in the pic), says that he flipped the scooter many times - usually when he hit a pothole.
The original carb is long gone unfortunately. The Aero currently uses an early 1960s Zenith carb, which seems to work just fine. But the original cabling isn't compatible with the Zenith carb, so the Aero doesn't have a choke cable, which complicates starting the Aero when cold.
The scooter came with a spare engine, which also has the very rare compression release built into the cylinder head. Frame Serial #37A937. The Spare Engine has a serial number stamped into it as well - 37333. I suspect the spare engine is the original engine, given the first 2 digits of the stamped serial number and the compression release head.
81 years from new, the unrestored 1937 is still rideable.
